The World Theatre in Einbeck – since 1910!
From the history of an old cinema
Einbeck - The "Welttheater" cinema in Einbeck was one of the first cinemas in Germany to open its doors in 1910.
It was founded by Ernst Heidelberg Sr. The Lower Saxon cinema pioneer was a long-time board member and honorary member of the Trade Association of Film Theaters in Northern Germany and worked in the film industry for over 40 years.
In addition to the Einbeck cinema, he also operated the "Eden Theater" in Göttingen from 1916 and the "Capitol" in Hanover in the 1920s. The "Welttheater" in Einbeck looks back on a long tradition: It began with 150 seats, which would increase to 800 in the following "cinema" years! An enormous number of seats for a cinema in a small town in southern Lower Saxony.
The cinema survived crises and changes of ownership and remained open continuously until 2019 at Marktplatz 20 in Einbeck. That year, the traditional cinema had to close for three months until the current owner, Youssef Omeirat, took over the "Welttheater." Today, the Einbeck cinema offers the latest film productions daily.
A special highlight is the "Film Art in Einbeck"Every Monday at 20 p.m., outstanding films are shown, because "you only experience film in the cinema!" With its impressive staircase and wonderfully plush cinema hall, the Welttheater in Einbeck is still worth a visit today.
A Snack bar with popcorn and other "cinema-worthy" treats is also available.
Today the cinema has a capacity of 226 spectators.
Since 2011, cinema technology has been digital, and films can now also be shown in 3D. The current cinema owner, Youssef Omeirat, is clearly showing the great commitment with which he runs "his" world theater.
A clear recommendation for Einbeck tourists and, of course, locals: the Welttheater cinema in the heart of the city, with its varied program, is a must. (Rita Heise)
