... and possibly one of the longest
Lower Saxony from
16th century.After the big one
City fire of 1540, in which the entire city burned down, originated in this street from
1541 the very first new buildings on this important
long-distance trade route and
Torstraße towards the market square. The years of construction
1541 – 1550 can be partly seen in the carvings on the facades of the houses.
The half-timbered houses in the street mostly have the following
method of construction with us:
- three-story in Mixed construction made of post and beam construction,
- a higher ground floor, a mezzanine and a projecting upper floor (also called upper floor),
- Compartments plastered with wickerwork and clay,
- Decorative carvings and ornaments (bar frieze, braided band and fan rosettes) on sill beams and corbels of the upper floor,
- high, round-arched gate entrances with decorative carvings as well as inscriptions, house marks and guild signs.
The high
archway of varying widths indicate that a large number of these houses have
Brewing license The round-arched entrances to the
former brewery were brewed on brewing days with
Brewing wagon and brew kettle drive through.
The narrow
dormer windows At that time they were used to ventilate the many attics where grain and hops were stored and dried for brewing beer.
