Friedrich Wilhelm Sertürner(1783 to 1841), born in Neuhaus near Paderborn, learned the pharmacist's trade in Paderborn before entering the service of the Council Pharmacy at the Lange Brücke in Einbeck. Here he experimented with the long-known drug opium and isolated a substance from it which he called “sleep-inducing principle” (morphine) He had thus the first alkaloid ever discovered.
In Napoleonic times, 1809 – 1817, Sertürner ran a own pharmacy in Einbeckbefore he 1822 the town pharmacy in Hamelin could buy.
He was born in the Chapel of St. Bartholomewat the gates Einbeck's buried where a stone commemorates him today.

Lange Brücke can be reached from Einbeck-Mitte train station in about 6 minutes (a 500-meter walk). From the train station, cross the traffic lights toward the ZOB (Einbeck bus station) and follow Dr.-Friedrich-Uhde-Straße to the Möncheplatz parking lot. From there, continue onto Lange Brücke, which leads to the market square. The memorial plaque is located on a house on the left.
