Construction methods and special features

  • Origin in the Middle Ages: The post and beam construction was the original half-timbered construction method common in Einbeck in the Middle Ages.

    • Post and beam construction is an early form of timber-framed construction in which the supporting posts (wooden posts) are arranged vertically and evenly spaced on a foundation or horizontal sill, forming the exterior walls. They run uninterrupted from the sill to the roof.
    • The post and beam construction allows the construction of several floors due to better static conditions.
  • Replacement by the storey construction method: From the 16th century onwards, the post and beam construction method was replaced by the storey construction method (frame construction method).

    • In multi-story construction, each floor is less than one story high and can extend beyond the floor below. The overhangs of the upper floors have created additional space on narrow plots.
    • This construction method offers static advantages.
  • Occurrence of mixed constructions: In Einbeck, many half-timbered houses were built as mixed constructions of both construction methods (for example, as a ground floor with continuous wall studs and an upper floor with floor frames placed on top).
