About Enescu
program:
George Enescu - Aubade for String Trio & Piano Quartet No. 1 in D major, Op. 16
Béla Bartók - Romanian Folk Dances for piano solo
Johannes Brahms - Hungarian Dances in a new arrangement for piano quartet by Pawel Zuzanski (2025)
Flex Ensemble, piano quartet
Dr. Roberto Reale, musicologist
The Flex Ensemble's new Salon Concert program brings together three composers who drew inspiration from folk music in their work. While Enescu, Bartók, and Brahms draw on Romanian and Hungarian traditions, they each interpret them from their own individual perspective: Bartók analytically and stylized, Brahms romantically and evocatively, and Enescu expressively and colorfully.
The central work is Enescu's monumental Piano Quartet, Op. 16, which reflects both his origins and his affinity with French music. Pawel Zuzanski's arrangement of the Hungarian Dances also bridges the gap between past and present. This creates a musical dialogue between national styles, eras, and personalities—united by the search for a unique, vibrant musical language.
