The home of Bock beer

Einbeck beer tradition

What would Einbeck be without its legendary beer?

Brewing has been a thriving activity here since the 14th century. In the Middle Ages, every citizen of Einbeck had the right to brew beer. More than 700 houses held brewing rights. Furthermore, the characteristic gateways of the former breweries, through which the heavy brewing kettles were transported, can still be seen in many half-timbered buildings.

A guided tour of the brewery is an entertaining way to learn more about hops, malt, and the art of brewing beer. A tasting isn't to be missed! Alternatively, you can discover Einbeck's rich beer history on the Einbeck Beer Trail. Follow the small white barrels painted on the ground through the city, passing historic sites and landmarks.

Cheers to Einbeck and to tradition!

Information about Einbecker beer

  • Einbeck is the cradle of Bock beer – The famous Bock beer originated in Einbeck! Even in the Middle Ages, Einbeck beer was so popular that it was shipped to Bavaria. There, the beer originally called Ainpöckisch eventually became Bock beer.

  • A brewing tradition dating back over 700 years – Einbeck's beer history dates back to the 14th century. At that time, many citizens were granted brewing rights to brew beer in their own homes. Until the 17th century, more than 700 houses held brewing rights, although not all of them actually brewed beer. Only later were the brewing rights consolidated into a central brewery – today's Einbeck Brewery.

  • A top export of the Middle Ages – Einbeck beer was already a top export in the Middle Ages! Einbeck had been a member of the Hanseatic League since 1368. Due to its improved quality, Einbeck beer was sought after far beyond the then Hanseatic city, and from the mid-14th century onwards, it was exported to over XNUMX sales locations from Scandinavia to the Alpine foothills.

  • Martin Luther is said to have praised Einbeck beer at the Diet of Worms on April 17, 1521. The reformer Martin Luther received a jug of Einbeck beer from Duke Erich and had several barrels of Einbeck beer delivered to him for his wedding to Katharina von Bora. Ainpöckisch beer went down in history as Martin Luther's favorite beer, and his famous quote has been passed down: "The best drink anyone knows is called Einbeck beer."

  • Tradition meets innovation – The Einbecker Brauhaus is constantly evolving with new processes and production methods to strengthen the connection between heritage and the future. At the same time, the centuries-old brewing tradition is preserved with new concepts for a modern beer culture.
